Congratulations! You have just experienced a sophisticated teeth whitening treatment. Catching yourself smiling more often that you usually do, is just one of the many ‘perks’ of having brighter teeth! However, the next 48 hours are important in enhancing your whitening results.

To help you maintain your results, there are a few things that you might want to consider. Your whitening results will depend on whether you follow up the treatment with the necessary care and maintenance. After your in-office Zoom whitening procedure, our cosmetic dentist will provide you with post-treatment care instructions. It is advised that you follow the simple post-treatment care instructions and stick to them as best you can.

In this blog, we have compiled some of the tips that will help you to maintain long-lasting whitening results:

Daily cleaning is a must

Indeed, a daily at-home cleaning regime is essential to maintaining the whiteness as it prevents the build-up of stain-causing particles on your teeth. If you neglect your daily brushing and flossing routines, it doesn’t take long for these new particles to accumulate, particularly if you are a frequent coffee or tea drinker. However, you can increase the longevity of your whitened teeth simply by cleaning them daily.

For optimum results, try to use oral hygiene products 20 minutes after consuming stain-causing food and drinks. This way, the stain-causing particles will not linger on your teeth enamel which may be harder to remove later. Think of it as a food stain on your shirt, where you would try to remove the stain with a wet tissue, to ensure it doesn’t leave a permanent mark.

You are strongly encouraged to use reputable whitening products like whitening toothpaste, mouthwash and floss. If you are unsure which whitening product brands to use, you may consult your dentist or our friendly staff.

If you took up our $699 Zoom whitening offer, you would have received a free take-home whitening kit that serves as a great after-care starter kit. You may also purchase other take-home after-care products from the Zoom range, including: Philips Zoom Whitening Pen, Philips Zoom DayWhite Touch-up take-home whitening and Philips Sonicare DiamondClean electric toothbrush. It is a good idea to stick to the professional Zoom range of products simply because they are designed to work optimally with the treatment you received.

You may want to avoid these foods

Besides keeping a good cleaning regime, you may also wish to adjust your eating habits accordingly. The key is to avoid or greatly reduce food and beverages that cause teeth discoloration. They mostly fall under these categories: acidic (low pH), dark liquids/foods, sugary (bacteria-causing) and of course, stain-causing foods and drinks.

The rule of thumb is; if the food or beverage would leave a permanent stain on light coloured clothing, it’s best to reduce intake or, if possible, avoid them completely. Examples are sauces and marinades, gravy, red wine, mustard, berries, beets and pasta. In terms of beverages, avoid extremely hot/cold drinks as the drastic temperature changes in your mouth may cause teeth expansion/contraction, and make your teeth prone to staining. Try to cut down on these beverages too: sodas, low pH juices, coffee and tea.

If you are a smoker, you would have been reminded by your cosmetic dentist to either cut down or quit smoking entirely. Smoking is one of the leading causes of yellowish stains, in addition to other more troubling health risks.
