Most people associate a cosmetic dentist with the diagnosis and treatment of purely aesthetic issues. While that is largely true, you may not be aware that some cosmetic treatments are used to deal with emergency situations as well. One of the most common dental emergencies is that of chipped or broken teeth, which typically occur as a result of an accident or injury. Some possible scenarios that can lead to chipped or broken teeth include; Impact from a fall, sporting injuries or carelessly biting down on a hard object.

It’s highly unlikely that anyone would be able to completely protect themselves from such unforeseen incidents, although exercising caution – like the wearing of athletic mouthguards – does help to a certain degree. However, should the inevitable happen, cosmetic dentists offer many options to help you repair the damage and restore the beauty of your smile? Below are some common examples:

Dental bonding or filling

Our practice at Albany Dental can help you with dental bonding or filling.

Depending on the extent of your chip, the dentist may recommend either a filling or dental bonding to fix the damage. If a tiny piece of enamel has chipped off, a white filling is normally recommended to fill in and restore the tooth.

If a highly visible front tooth has a sizeable chip, a process known as dental bonding – where a tooth-coloured composite resin is placed and shaped to repair the tooth – is usually preferred. Dental bonding involves a simple procedure that will not desensitise the affected tooth but will strengthen it. The composite resin is bonded to the tooth using an adhesive substance, then shaped and light-cured to harden the material. The result is a seamless finished look that mimics a natural tooth.

Dental veneers

Veneers are an extremely effective way to improve your smile. Good option to use if you have a broken front tooth.

If you have a broken front tooth, then dental veneers may offer a better option. Dental veneers are essentially thin shells or laminates – made of porcelain or composite resin – that are used to cover your existing teeth to conceal the broken tooth. The veneers can be sculpted and shaped to totally blend in with the rest of your natural teeth so that they are virtually indistinguishable from real teeth.

Dental cap

Dental caps are an effective option for chipped teeth.

If a large piece of the tooth enamel has chipped off, the dentist may also suggest restoring it with a crown. The process would usually involve the dentist filling the remaining tooth before covering it with the tooth-like cap or crown. Many people opt for resin, ceramic or porcelain fused metal (PFM) crowns for their aesthetic appearance. Porcelain crowns are favoured for restoring front teeth due to their strength, durability and natural aesthetics. If the affected tooth is less conspicuous or located at the back of the mouth, then a ceramic, zirconia or PFM crown may be preferred for their strength, in particular for the restoration of larger fractures.

In the case of a badly fractured tooth with an exposed nerve, the dentist may recommend a root canal to relieve the pain and preserve the original tooth. The root canal procedure may also precede the crowning process to seal off and protect the repaired tooth.
