More on General Dentistry at Albany Dental

General dentistry tends to focus on preventative measures to keep your general dental health in check. However, the role of a general dentist covers a broad range of responsibilities that may extend into cosmetic and restorative treatments.

At Albany Dental, our general dentists are fully equipped to provide an extensive range of preventative treatments as part of an active maintenance dental health programme, in addition to general services such as amalgam replacement, root canal treatment and wisdom teeth extraction.

We want to give our patients the right dental foundation to maintain the healthy state of their teeth and gums. Our provision of preventive care and general maintenance will save you from future dental problems and endless trips to the dentist that cost time and money!

Here’s a quick run-down on some of the general dentistry services that you can find at Albany Dental:

  • Amalgam Replacement

Many patients are beginning to appreciate the aesthetic quality of replacing their amalgam fillings with what is known as “white fillings” – or rather, tooth-coloured composite filling materials.

Until in recent years, dentists have been placing silver-coloured amalgams to repair tooth defects. Although amalgams serve a great functional purpose, today’s patients prefer a more aesthetically pleasing option in composite fillings. They not only boast equally impressive functional properties, they look more much more natural – virtually indistinguishable from your real teeth! Unlike silver amalgams that look like tooth cavities from afar, these tooth-coloured fillings work and look great!

  • Gum Health Maintenance

Gum disease is potentially a very serious condition that affects the oral health of many people. If left untreated, this disease can even lead to serious medical conditions like heart disease, diabetes, cancer, stroke and respiratory disease.

Regular visits to the dentist for oral exams and professional cleans help to keep the disease in check and greatly reduce its incidence rate. Due to its high prevalence and health risks, it is important that you visit a dentist immediately should you find any symptoms – which include swollen gums, loose teeth, bleeding gums and bad breath.

  • Root Canal Treatment

Patients have to undergo a root canal treatment when the nerves near the root end of their tooth are diseased due to a deep decay or injury. If left untreated, a root canal problem can escalate into a serious infection or lead to death of the tooth.

The primary objective of a root canal treatment is to preserve your natural tooth and avoid extraction. If your tooth feels sensitive when it comes into contact with cold or hot food and beverages, it is one of the common symptoms that suggest a root canal problem. You would need to get an oral exam or x-ray to determine if indeed treatment is necessary.

  • Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Wisdom teeth extractions may sound scary but it is usually a better experience if you removed the offending tooth than put up with the pain.

A wisdom tooth can cause problems if it emerges sideways or partially, and gets in the way of neighbouring teeth and their normal growth. They can also lead to dental infections and even develop into a cyst around the tooth.

It is a good idea to get your wisdom tooth checked by a dentist as early as possible so as to make sure the eruption does not cause any pain or future complication.
