IV Sedation Dentistry

IV Sedation Dentistry lets you undergo your dental treatment without pain or discomfort.

If the thought of visiting a dentist makes you fearful or anxious in any way, you may be a candidate for IV Sedation Dentistry. IV Sedation Dentistry is a safe and effective method for calming a patient prior to treatment.

It involves the use of a liquid form of sedative that is administered directly into the patient’s bloodstream via an injection. IV Sedation works by relaxing the muscles of patients in order to minimize stress or anxiety that they may experience during treatment. Although Sedation Dentistry can take many forms – including pill sedation and laughing gas – IV Sedation provides the more effective means of helping patients cope with their dental anxiety.

In the expert hands of our dental professionals, you will not experience any pain or discomfort that certain types of procedures may cause. Before you know it, the treatment will be over and you will be beaming at the comfortable experience and beautiful results!

To find out more about our IV Sedation Dentistry services, call Albany Dental at (07) 3264 9590. All IV sedation sessions are undertaken at our Brisbane City clinic. Dr Steve D'Arcy from Albany Dental is able to undertake your dental treatment there.

What you need to know about IV Sedation Dentistry

Intravenous Sedation, or IV Sedation for short, does not actually put you to sleep. Although you would be fully conscious throughout the procedure, you will also be completely relaxed. Your mind will be at ease and you will have little or no recollection of the procedure afterwards.

Who is it for?

If you have been avoiding dental procedures due to negative past experiences or tooth sensitivity, sedation dentistry provides a way for you to cope with the fears and anxiety. Your fear of the dental experience may put you at risk of developing serious long-term dental and gum-related ailments. With the help of IV sedation dentistry, you no longer have to compromise your oral health.

IV Sedation is often recommended for folks who have been putting off treatment for years. It takes about one or two IV Sedation dental appointments for them to make up for lost time. That’s because a lot more can be accomplished by the dentist when a patient is adequately sedated and compliant.

However, it must be noted that IV Sedation is not for everyone. You should discuss the various sedation options with your dentist to see if you would benefit from the process.

Generally speaking, it is greatly beneficial for children who need a lot of dental work done or for those with negative or traumatic experience. It is also recommended for adults with anxiety issues and commonly administered prior to wisdom teeth removal or other extractions.

Is it safe?

IV Sedation Dentistry is an extremely safe method of dental sedation with a long record of proven results. Over the past 30 years, it has been successfully used on millions of patients with pre-existing fear of the dentist. Studies have shown that it carries a lower risk than local anaesthetic.

Is IV sedation for all treatments?

This is normally recommended for procedures like wisdom tooth removal and other major dental treatments. Sleep Dentistry/ IV Sedation is designed to make you feel relaxed during treatment, inducing a sleep-like experience in which you are still able to respond to the dentist yet will have no memory of the procedure after the treatment.

All our IV Sedation sessions are administered by a visiting anaesthetist and performed in the patient rooms of our Brisbane City clinic. Dr Steve D’Arcy from Albany Dental will be able to work on your dental treatment at the facility.

IV Sedation Waitlist and Schedules

As many of our patients choose to undergo their treatments under IV sedation, we will need to place you on a waiting list. The waitlist is developed to ensure that our dentist and anaesthetist do not exceed the maximum number of treatments per day and are afforded enough rest between each patient. In turn, they will be in a better position to provide the appropriate attention and care that you deserve.

Our visiting anaesthetist, Dr Oscar Cifuentes, is available once per month – usually scheduled on either a Monday or Wednesday. While we are unable to provide IV Sedation session dates on a regulated basis, we endeavour to confirm your appointment as soon as a date has been finalised.

Emergency Contact

Should you encounter a dental emergency – pain in the teeth or gums, deterioration of dental condition etc. – please contact us immediately. Please specify whether or not you decide to proceed with your treatment under IV sedation.

Important things to note – before going for your IV sedation appointments:

  1. Do not eat or drink anything (including water) for 5 hours prior to your IV Sedation appointment.
  2. You must pre-arrange for a responsible adult to collect you from the clinic (Face Value Dental: 11/138 Albert St Brisbane) after your appointment. For your own safety, you are required to provide the nominated person’s information to the clinic’s reception prior to your appointment. Please note that IV Sedation patients will not be allowed to leave the surgery without the company of an adult under any circumstances.
  3. You are strongly encouraged to arrange for your nominated person to settle payment for both the IV Sedation and Dental Treatment sessions on your behalf.

This is the most favourable option given your sedation effects would not have completely worn off immediately after the treatment. Your nominated person will also be tasked to receive the post-operative care instructions before leaving the surgery.

At Albany Dental, our dental professionals are trained to administer IV Sedatives, which effectively lowers the risk even more. As trained professionals, we will monitor you and your anxiety levels throughout the procedure to ensure that you are safe and protected at all times. Before you decide on the form of Sedation Dentistry, make sure you consult with a professional dentist to determine whether you are a suitable candidate.

With IV Sedation Dentistry, you don’t have to worry about undergoing any dental procedure again. To find out more about our IV Sedation Dentistry services, call Albany Dental at (07) 3264 9590.
