Headache Prevention

It may surprise you but Dentists can effectively treat headaches and migraines!

You may know what triggers a headache – intense light, loud noise, smells, some foods like chocolate, food additives, hormonal changes, or stress.

However, did you know that clenching the teeth and muscle tension of the face and neck ( especially while asleep ) is THE underlying factor in 90% of all headaches.

This astounding fact was researched by the Food and Drug Administration in the USA in clinical trials. The results showed that inhibiting the clenching of teeth during sleep was twice as effective than any migraine medication in reducing the intensity and frequency of migraines.

Recent onset of acute headaches should be thoroughly checked by a Medical Doctor. However, if you have been medically assessed and you control headaches regularly with medication, the FDA recommends that you be prescribed an NTI anti-clenching oral appliance as the first instance of treatment. Wearing a simple oral device called an NTI reduces muscle tension in the jaws, temples, neck and back of head.

82% of medically diagnosed migraine sufferers had a 77% reduction in migraine episodes within the first 8 weeks of use of an NTI, and needed to take less than half their normal medication.

What is an NTI?

An NTI is a custom-made oral device that fits over your front teeth.

When do I wear it ?

The NTI is worn at night to prevent teeth clenching when asleep.

How do I get one ?

The NTI can only be made and fitted by a Dentist.

Is it a dental splint ?

No – you can clench on a dental splint or night guard and still have headaches. This is different.
